EVER HEARD OF "EXISTENTIAL CRISIS"?
An existential crisis is the experience of facing life’s big questions, such as, “What is my meaning or purpose in life? Where am I going with my life? What would make me feel alive?” These questions can be triggered by life transitions or by feeling a general "stuckness" in life. Sometimes, they can show up as anxiety or depression.
If an existential crisis is a difficult experience, it is also an opportunity for growth. If we ignore it, hoping that it will eventually go away, it can lead to us feeling an intensifying sense of deadness within us. But an existential crisis may also spur us to think more creatively about who we want to be, what we want to be remembered for at the end of our lives, and subsequently act towards it.
WHAT IS EXISTENTIAL THERAPY?
Existential therapy is is a form of psychotherapy grounded on the model of human nature and experience in a philosophical worldview. It focuses on concepts that are universally applicable to human existence including death, freedom, responsibility, and the meaning of life.
Existential therapists focus less on diagnosing psychopathology and providing relief of symptoms: there is no diagnostic label. Instead, distressing “symptoms” such as anxiety, depression or rage are recognised as potentially meaningful and comprehensible reactions to current circumstances and personal contextual history.
HOW CAN EXISTENTIAL THERAPY HELP YOU?
Arriving at your own insights
The therapist is like a facilitator - a guide who shines a torch on the blind spots in your life. Through exploration, you will learn to make choices that are true to yourself.
Developing the courage to make difficult decisions
Life is always changing (relationship loss, switching careers, entering the workforce, settling into university, coping with a death, mid/quarter-life crisis, etc.). Existential therapy will help you become aware of the challenges and options available for you.
Becoming the expert of your life
You will explore how to get more comfortable living with the anxieties and uncertainties in life. You will understand that uncomfortable feelings are part of the human condition. You can achieve personal autonomy, authenticity and the freedom to decide what is best for yourself and with others.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?
Existential therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. Both online and in-person sessions are available. In-person sessions take place in a safe environment where one can feel comfortable working on understanding and improving themselves.
The purpose of therapy is to empower clients with skills and resources to become independent in helping themselves when similar struggles arise and to enable them to become the experts or agents of their own lives. Answers are more meaningful when it comes from within ourselves. Questions like ‘how do you relate to this?’, ‘how do you feel about it?’ or ‘what does that mean to you?’ will be encountered to help clients make sense on their own experiences.
